Our Government Approved Kindergarten Program

Posted by Angela Watson on 4 August 2020
Our Government Approved Kindergarten Program

Kindergarten is very similar to the other age groups at Kookaburra in that we provide high quality educational programs for all the children enrolled in the room.

However our Kindergarten program caters specifically for children in the year prior to Prep. In addition to the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) our Kindergarten curriculum is informed by the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guidlines (QKLG). We employ a Bachelor Qualified Early Childhood Teacher to run our Kindergarten progam with face to face delivery of the program from 8.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday. Outside these hours we have a Diploma Qualified Lead Educator to run the program.

For children to get the most out of our Kindergarten program, they should arrive before 9am and leave after 3.30pm.

Our Kindergarten is Government Approved, this means low income families whose children have health care cards can access additional fee relief for their child to attend a kindergarten program, however they must attend at least 3 days per week and cannot be attending another government approved kindergarten program.

In addition parents of Kindergarten aged children are offered exemption from the Goverments activity test for the purpose of Child Care Subsidy (CCS). This means you can access upto 36 hours of subsidised care for your Kindergarten aged child even if you don't currently meet the governments activity test requirements.

Child Care Subsidy Estimator

Child Care Subsidy Estimator

On the 2nd July 2018, the Australian Government introduced the Jobs for Families package. The Package will help parents with children aged 0 to 13 who need to work, train, study and volunteer access affordable child care for their children. The Package includes Child Care Subsidy, which replaced our old Child Care Benefit and Child Care Rebate package.

Under the Child Care Subsidy, the percentage of subsidy a family is entitled to is based on their combined annual income, with more financial support available to lower income families.

Current levels of family income and the amount of Child Care Subsidy payable as a percentage of the actual fee charged or hourly rate cap, for 2019/2020 are:
Family income                                                             Subsidy per cent of the actual fee charged or hourly rate cap, whichever is lower
Up to $68,163                                                                85 per cent
More than $68,163 to below $173,163                          Decreasing to 50 per cent
$173,163 to below $252,453                                         50 per cent
$252,453 to below $342,453                                         Decreasing to 20 per cent
$342,453 to below $352,453                                         20 per cent
$352,453 or more                                                          0 per cent

Annual subsidy cap
Families earning $188,163 or less per year are not subject to a cap on the amount of Child Care Subsidy they can access. Families earning over $188,163 and under $352,453 have an annual cap of $10,373 per year per child.

Three things will determine a family's level of Child Care Subsidy:
1. Combined family income

2. Activity level of parents

3. Type of child care service

Mother's Day Afternoon
At Kookaburra we have certain pre-planned events that happen at the Centre. One of those events is our Mother's Day afternoon. The aim of this event is to provide the special women in each child's life the oportunity to come into the Centre and spend some quality time in our learning environments with the little people who mean the most to them. We encourage not just Mums but Grandmas, Aunties, Friends, Cousins and any special women in a childs life to attend. We offer a range of fun activities for the children to engage in with their visitor and provide some light refrseshments such as scones with jam and cream, coffee and tea.

Berky the Brush Turkey

Berky the Brush Turkey
Berky visits Kookaburra each year. Berky is a puppet that travels around mackay visiting schools and childcare centres to promote reading to the children in their early years. Berky gets to spend a day in each room and the children get to interact, read, sing, talk and cuddle him.
